Lance Letscher
Artist Statement
Lance Letscher is best known for his dexterous three-dimensional illusions. Letscher meticulously constructs his compositions from a variety of discarded and found objects from a myriad of sources. With antique notebooks and magazines to record covers and letter fragments, Letscher creates powerful compositions fueled by their juxtaposition of color and value.
For nearly 11 years, Letscher worked for artist Amado Pena as a printmaker – creating multi-plate color etchings, monotypes, and lithographs. Through this practice, Lance was pushed to work every day – whether he felt inspired or not. In turn, Lance learned to disconnect from the conscious mind and connect with the subconscious. In this intuitive creative process, he exercises his patience and welcomes opportunism; within lies zero ties to preconceived notions or concepts.
Through his densely layered complex compositions, Letscher creates an immeasurable kaleidoscope of shape and color that forces the viewer to see through the lens of imagination. The 2-D picture plane parallels the triumphs and tragedies one experiences through the inevitable act of living. His work hides neither the depths of pain nor the truth of life – but embraces it. Letscher harnesses the trauma and hardships of life and uses his transformative power of creation to mirror mortality with a beautifully saturated lithograph. You are left connected with the creative impulse that resides at the heart of human nature.
